Not again

This is Pastor Tim’s Evening Leader article for Monday, August 9, 2021

Well, here we go again.  I just read a headline that calls for Joe Biden’s impeachment.  It almost doesn’t matter why because we all knew it was coming.  Both sides of the political aisle knew this would happen eventually.  One side impeached Trump so now the other side is returning the favor.  To be honest, this took longer than I thought it would.  However, I was praying it would never happen.

We don’t have time for this.  If Biden does something actually illegal, then it may be warranted, but this constant refrain of impeaching presidents has to stop.  No President has ever nor will ever make everyone happy.  That is one of the costs of leadership.  But this idea that we are just going to attempt to throw people out who don’t make us happy is no way to run a country.

I understand that there were two candidates on the ballot in 2020.  One was Trump and the other one wasn’t.  No matter what your opinion of the election was, at the end of the day, the candidate who wasn’t Trump was elected.  What we need to do now is quit looking at the national scene and living by those politics.  We are divided enough.  If you are unhappy with where we are, you will have a chance to have your voice heard in the mid-term election next year.  Getting upset about it doesn’t do anything but make you upset.

The call for impeachment came from Chip Roy, a Republican Representative from Texas.  He is upset about how the Biden southern border enforcement is leading his community into chaos due to the number of unauthorized immigrants flooding across the border.

My opinion on that border is that it needs to be closed and enforced because of the amount of sex trafficking that takes place there.  I believe that sex trafficking is the purest form of evil ever invented.  For those children to be shipped across the border for that purpose is sick and should never be tolerated by a civilized society.  We should do everything in our power to make sure not one more child of God is ever subjected to that kind of wickedness.

Does impeaching Biden solve the problem that Representative Roy wants to address?  No, it does not.  We can look at Roy’s complaint and see that there is merit, and that the border issue needs to be addressed.  But to have another series of investigations and debates filled with mudslinging and high-sounding nonsense is not what we need right now.  The best thing we can do is bring the temperature down because America has a fever and the longer we continue to drink the poison of controversy, the longer we will remain sick.

The very first guarantee in the Bill of Rights is the freedom of speech.  In a country with freedom as its core value, we are destined to have disagreements.  The only sound way to never have conflict is to simply eliminate the opposition.  But freedom of speech was not created for us to focus on what divides us.  Yes, we have disagreements, but we need to figure out what unity despite disagreement looks like.  We need conversation, listening and respect.  We need leaders who stand their ground while realizing that the people they disagree with are not the enemy.  There is no way on this earth that another impeachment trial will help us accomplish that goal.

My challenge to you is to find a way to ease a tension.  Somewhere in your life there is a disagreement or some ruffled feathers.  A situation that is awkward and difficult.  Instead of waiting for the other person to make a move, I challenge you to make that move.  Reach into a situation where you have some serious objections.  I challenge you to take Jesus’ advice from the Sermon on the Mount and go be a peacemaker.  The only way any of this is going to get better is if someone like you makes the first step.
